Episode 89 | Elizabeth Heiskell
From Oxford Square to Times Square | Elizabeth Heiskell
Elizabeth Heiskell is SUCH a delight. We laughed our way through the entire episode- and barely got to ask a question. We wanted her to keep going with her story- to tell us all the hilarious bumps on the road of her journey to success.
Raised in the Mississippi Delta, Elizabeth relocated to Oxford with her husband Luke when he decided they needed to be vegetable farmers. Grossly overshooting their planting season, the Heiskells ended up with more tomatoes than they knew what to do with. Luke bought Elizabeth an old prison van- complete with bars on the windows- to sell their tomatoes out of. She sold tomatoes from from West Tennessee to Alabama and back to Mississippi wherever and to whomever she could.
Trying to figure out what to do with all the tomatoes led her to the creation of her now famous Bloody Mary Mix and she labeled herself The Debutante Farmer.
A twist of fate led her to preside over a dinner where the newest head of NBC would be attending. After he gushed over the meal she prepared she made it VERY clear her intentions for going on the Today Show. And once she did, they had to have her as a permanent figure on the show.
